My Groundhopping Journey
My name is Jack, and my aim is to visit every team in the Scottish league pyramid setup. (Easier said than done!) In order to "bag" a team, all I have to do is watch a game at a teams official home ground. Abandonments and ground moves will require a re-visit.
Having been a proud Raith Rovers fan since childhood, I was shocked to learn a few years ago that my knowledge of the Scottish game was nowhere near where I thought it was. In 2014, I met my partner who was a volunteer at local junior side Kennoway Star Hearts. Going to their games was a real eye opener to how many leagues, teams, and levels of football were present. It was like discovering a whole new world, and I ended up falling in love with the junior and semi-professional game. My notion that the league positions stopped at East Stirlingshire (sorry Shire fans!) was blown out of the water. I'd heard of the likes of Linlithgow Rose, Auchinleck Talbot, and a handful of the Highland League teams previously, but with absolutely no knowledge of their week by week existence.
Eventually the joy of discovering new teams, new grounds, new people and new towns, became more than just following my two local teams, it has become a window into different cultures, accents, scenery, flavours and so much more, all crammed into a nation on 5 million. And what better way to discover it all than weaving through the cities, towns, and villages that all host our beloved game every Saturday.
